When 5 Turns into 20

Date July 5, 2009

So let me tell you what I really love about having lost the weight and being in good health. Yesterday morning D and I headed out on our bikes for an easy five mile ride to Starbucks and while we were sitting outside drinking our coffee D casually said, “Why don’t we ride over to Whole Foods and pick up dinner for tonight?”

And so, on a whim our little five mile bike ride turned into a twenty mile excursion. We took the longest way possible to get to Whole Foods and had the best time doing so. While there were a few sloping hills for the most part it was sweet flat land much of the way and the weather was beautiful…sunny but cool. There were new things to look at, fellow bikers and runners to shout “Happy Fourth!” to and an empty grade school playground with swings and slides that you better believe we played on.  Once we arrived at Whole Foods we picked out a few veggies for dinner, asked the butcher to pack the free-range organic chicken in ice for our bike basket and headed back home. That spontaneous long delicious bike ride and those few hours we spent together would have been impossible were it not for the work we’ve done to get to where we are. I know I must have been smiling like a goofball much of the time because I couldn’t help but thinking what a miracle this all was; that D and I were sharing such simple fun together.

This is why it’s worth the work of losing the weight and getting in fit physical condition. It’s not about the clothes or the vanity or the compliments. It’s about the joy of moments like this.
