Day Five

Date January 11, 2009

Does time fly in your corner of the world? Never enough hours in the day? Well, my friends, I know the secret for slowing down the hands of the clock.

Do. Not. Eat.

Don’t eat and I can promise you the hours of the day will drag along at a snail’s pace, which I hear can be quite delicious with garlic butter and a splash of cognac. But I digress….and I drool.

Today being Sunday was church which meant my morning started by slicing apple strudel and arranging slices of banana, poppy seed, and chocolate date bread on trays for the after church social. It will get easier, it will get easier, it will get easier, she said tapping her ruby reds together. It was manageable enough but just a wee little sketchy given I’m so new to fasting I’m still flossing my last meal out of my teeth.

So while I’m not eating these days, I’m continuing to partake, of communion that is. I’d thought about it a lot; whether I should or shouldn’t or at least wait to get a few weeks into the fast but when it came time to go to the table this morning I knew I wasn’t going to give up that one bite of bread and sip of juice for any reason. I love going to the table and so if partaking of the elements kicks up my food cravings up for a short time each week, so be it. There’s something pretty wonderful about knowing that the only time each week I’ll eat is when I take communion. I love the idea actually.

Oh, by the way. The comment two paragraphs up where I mention still flossing my last meal out of my teeth? Not true. I was simply taking dramatic license. I don’t anyone to think my dental hygiene is lacking.

D and I went on another walk this afternoon a little closer to home around Lafayette Reservoir on a day just as magnificent as yesterday. There’s a 2.7 mile paved path that circles the reservoir with a challenging number of ascents and descents and is a great place for us to start up a regular exercise routine together. Day five is nearly at an end and truthfully it’s been a really enjoyable day without a whiff of grilled onions or hot dogs anywhere.
