Day Two

Date January 8, 2009

fridgeJust in case you were wondering, this is what the inside of a refrigerator looks like when everyone in the house is on a liquid fast. Pop and water. Water and pop.

The shakes come in several flavors:

Tomato and Hickory-Smoke Potato are served hot and taste like soup. In prison. Okay, they aren’t all that bad and with the cold weather it’s nice to have a hot option. I can also add dry spices to them and so have jars of smoked paprika, dill, basil, curry, cumin and a bunch of others at the ready.

Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, and Guava-Pineapple-Lemon are served cold although I suppose you could have a nice creamy mug of hot chocolate. I just don’t think my imagination is that good. So I drink 5 of these a day which I can blend with either a diet caffeine-free soda or 8 ounces of water. This is where all the soda pop comes in. Diet root bear, orange cream, black cherry and chocolate fudge are our favorites. Think about it. A diet root beer blended with a package of vanilla is like having a rich smooth creamy root beer float. I bet right now you’re wishing you could trade in your double-cheese burger and fries for that tasty treat, aren’t you?

Seriously, it’s really not bad at all. Plus we can add another depth of flavor with a wide range of sugarfree Torani syrups. Drop the pop, the powder, the syrup, and a couple cubes of ice in the blender and there you go, a whirling pond of heaven. In additional to 5 shakes a day, I drink about 80-90 ounces of water and can have up to 2 chicken or beef bouillon cubes a day. I’m peeing. A lot.

Am I hungry on my second day? Uhhhh…..YES! My body is in a total rant about what’s going on and is responding with all the anticipated growls and groans but it’s survivable. Contrary to what I once believed, I won’t die from a hunger pang. I’ll just get really really cranky.

    Anita,
Is that refrigerator shot for real? My fridge has never been that clean!!

I tried an unsupervised liqid diet once. On the third day I felt sick , got nauseous, and immediately started eating after that. Never looked back.

Good luck to you. I commend you for taking charge and working at being the person you want to be. Way to go!

Sandi –> It is indeed! And ours has never been that clean either! Like you I attempted with miserable results a fast of my own years ago and had the same outcome. I even did a medical fast years ago that wasn’t any better, however in recent years they’ve greatly improved the nutritional balance of the shakes and so far while I’m hungry, there’s been no nausea or lightheadedness and my wife hasn’t had any in the two months she’s already been on it. Here’s hoping!

You go with your awesome self Anita!

I may still tease you but I totally commend you for doing this!

And in approx. one week, I will be joining you……not the fast…..but I plan on losing 50 lbs. myself by May 23rd.

    Go Anita. GO!

Stephanie–> “Go with my awesome self?” I love that. I’m going to look in the mirror in the morning and say it just for the fun of it. So how my dear are you planning on losing that much weight by May 23? That’s even faster than I’ll be able to lose it with a complete fast. Do you know a healthy secret I don’t know?

Well, it’s my first 50 lbs, which for many are much easier lose than your last 30 lbs. and I am hoping I’m one of the many. If I lose only 35lbs., I will be pleased as well.

I have gained a ton of weight in the last 3 years and have done nothing to really to lose it and it is so past time. The upcoming wedding has been even more of an incentive!

Prior to our Christmas break, for about two weeks, I began eating a lot more organic. Ate a lot less meat, cut way back of pretty much all those foods that aren’t good for you…..which is a lot, as I’m sure you know. I stayed away from caffeine, sugar, fried foods, processed food, pretty much everything that comes in a package or box. I just began to eat a lot of fresh foods really and I lost 7 pounds in that 2 week period and began to feel really good.

I spent that two weeks on changing my frame of mind from “live to eat” to “eat to live” and also on new recipes. When you are working on changing your eating habits, you know it takes a lot just to do these two new things so although I probably could have, I didn’t really spend much time focusing on the exercising part of it. Which I know, is a must!

So, in about a week, this is what I plan on doing again.
