Decking the Guest Bathroom

Date December 14, 2009

I might not be stiff competition with Martha Stewart’s sense of holiday flare but I think my guest bathroom is looking mighty festive these days. Have I mentioned that the guest bathroom is the singular space in our home that my beloved as allowed me to display my Pez collection while her collection of cutsie little clay mice are virtually taking over our entire living space? Not that I have any issues with this discriminatory double standard mine you.

Anyway, I rather think my Christmas themed Pez heads, accented with Mr. Santa Potatohead, my most recent acquisition at a cool 8.99 (money well spent) are a fine reflection of the holiday spirit.

If you look closer you’ll also see a few pieces from my LittleStreet Collection which are each handmade by my Bible college buddy and insanely funny friend, Elayne Watrus. When we were in college together, back in the mid-70′s, I have no memory of Elayne actually attending class, but instead all my memories revolve around sitting in her little apartment living room watching her painstakingly craft these little people on a TV tray littered with their FIMO dough body parts. She made it look so easy that every once in a while I’d pawn off a ball of FIMO from her with the grand notion of starting my own line of collectibles. The plan was to make all my little people naked and call them the LittleStreaks Collection, but as it turned out I had and still have no artistic ability with clay (or paints, mixed media, music, yarn, chalk, you name it) and so I had to abandon my dream and settle for being a pastor.

When D and I were married back in 2002 Elayne custom made our cake top with a figure of D and I dressed in our wedding clothes. Eight years later and the cake top still sits on a shelf in our house, the only noticeable wear to them being that occasionally my head falls off and rolls onto the floor. Given that I lost my head and my heart when I met D it seems somehow poetic.

Anyway, I wanted to let you have a close up look at the little critters we have and then nudge you to go over to her website and take a look at her other pieces in a variety of themes. She’s my friend. It’s Christmas. You still have shopping to do. It’s a perfect match!
